Obituary of Richard S. Sturdevant

Richard "Dick" S. Sturdevant of Livingston Manor passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Achieve Rehab & Nursing. He was 88.

He was the son of the late Elmer and Ethel Turner Sturdevant, born on February 3, 1930 in Livingston Manor, NY.

Dick proudly served his country in the US Army as a Sergeant from 1951 until 1954. He grew up in Livingston Manor and attended United Methodist Church, but later became a member of the Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church after he married Gertrude. While at the church he served as an Elder and Trustee. Dick was a member of the Masonic Lodge #798 F&AM for over 60 years and was a Third Degree Mason. He was the Trustee of the lodge and past Master in 1963.

Dick and his father-in-law worked hand and hand and ran the Electric Service Shop and Hardware from 1957 until 1962 when he purchased it and continued to operate it until 2002. After that he continued to work out of his home office until 2011.

He was very active in his community serving on many different committees. He was a member of the Manor Hose Fire Department serving as Chief from 1972-1974 and past president from 1979-1992 and again in 2011. In addition he was a past President of the Sullivan County Volunteer Fireman Association and lifetime member. He was also a member of Lester White Post #566 American Legion.

Dick was a member of the Town of Rockland Republican Committee and served as Councilman for the Town of Rockland from 1980 to 1995. Dick was an avid hunter and founding member of the Cradle Rock Ridge Hunting Club. He was a member of the NRA and President of the Avery Foundation. In his spare time he enjoyed watching football and was a Jets and Giants fan. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to all that knew him he will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife Gertrude S. Sturdevant whom he married on April 13, 1952; his daughter Beth Schumacher and her husband Mark; daughter-in-law Theresa Sturdevant and his sister-in-laws Mary Schleiermacher and Julia Sturdevant; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Craig R. Sturdevant and two brothers Donald and Robert Sturdevant.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 12th from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Colonial-Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl Street, Livingston Manor, NY 12758. A Firematic service will take place at 7:30pm at the funeral home followed by a Masonic service. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 13th at 10:30am at Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church, 568 Old Rte 17, Livingston Manor, NY 12758. Burial will follow at Lew Beach Cemetery.
