Obituary of Rebecca Ashley Courtney

Rebecca Ashley "Becky" Courtney, formerly of Mountaindale, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018 at her residence in North Carolina after succumbing to her complications with juvenile diabetes. She was 26. She was the daughter of Donald L. Courtney and Irma M. Ortiz Torres, born on February 24, 1992 in Middletown, NY. Becky currently worked as a boat detailer, a job she enjoyed because it kept her close to the ocean. She truly loved living next to the ocean. She was raised in Sullivan County and during high school she was very involved in sports, she graduated from Fallsburg High School in 2010 after which she attended Orange County Community College. In her free time, she was a volunteer member of the Summitville Fire Department and enjoyed helping people, most recently she volunteered her time to helping those who were recently released from prison and had addiction problems. Becky also lived for 5 years in Puerto Rico, where she was a volunteer for the Office of Emergency Management Services and Special Response Task Force Rescue Group. While in Puerto Rico, she attended EMT school and also received a degree in commercial digital photography. She loved the thrill of zip lining and scuba diving. She was easy going, had a great sense of humor and was always there for those in need. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her, she will be deeply missed. She is survived by her mother, Irma Ortiz Torres; sister Elizabeth Ortiz and her fiancé Adam Birkett; and nieces Gabriella, Giuliana, Graciela and Genevieve. In lieu of flowers donations in Becky's name can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 30 Glenn St # 409, White Plains, NY 10603 or to the Summitville Fire Department, 3978 US-209, Wurtsboro, NY 12790. Services will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 from 4 to 7:30pm at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788. A firematic service will follow at the funeral home.
