I just found out about Lawrence's passing. I was acquainted with Lawrence as a child through a friendship of my grandfather Emil Assentsto and his father Bob. I recall visiting their cabin on the Willowemac River where my grandfather also owned a cabin in the 70's. I recall many dinners as a kid that were attended by Lawrence, his brother Robert and dad Bob along with my father Robert and grandfather Emil. I have fond memories of this long ago chapter in my life and just wanted to share.

Lawrence and Shannon...
My sincere condolences to you both. Your Dad called me in Florida, a month ago, telling me of the losses in his life. Jo and Dom e-mailed me tonight informing of your Dad's passing. He was a wonderful man and when possible we spent memorable quality time together when I lived in Liberty. I miss him dearly.

Larry will be missed. I have such fond memories of him over the years. I remember when we went to Six Flags. What a blast we had. I remember going to the broadway shows with you and your dad along with the students. Your dad was very giving and kind. I remember visiting with you on several occasions at the house in Roscoe. He loved that home and found it to be a source of peace away from the hustle and bustle of Half Hollow Hills.
He touched the lives of over 3,500 students and made a solid impression on hundreds of families in the process. He did so much to help the less fortunate and they will be forever grateful for the kindness and generosity that he has shown so many people throughout the years.
He only wanted to be loved and respected in return. Was that too much to ask? I don't think so. That is the least that he deserved. I hope that you and Shannon along with baby Isabella will cherish the memories of your father and keep his memory burning strong in your hearts.
Your dad was part of my life for more than twenty years. I loved to make me laugh, and sometimes he made me cry. He confided in me about things that made him sad as well as events that brought him the greatest joy. Know that your father absolutely loved you unconditionally. You were always his pride and joy.
I want to let you know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep in touch.

Although I was never a student of Mr. Genovese, I was fortunate to perform observation hours under his supervision at the Candlewood Middle School for my degree in library science. I remember his warmth, positive energy and enthusiasm for his students and colleagues. I am thinking of his family, former students and colleagues.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Mr Genovese. Although we never kept in touch over the years, Mr G was a very special teacher in my life, he was the first teacher that encouraged me and took and interest in my love of the theater. I do believe it was his first year teaching at Burr's when he was my Comm. Skills teacher. He was a big part of those early years in Burr's Lane and I will always remember him and cherish those memories. I even remember meeting his dad after a high school show I did, a very sweet man as well. I can only say from reading his obit he seemed a person who had it all and lived life the way one should, full of love and passion. My deepest sympathy to his family.-

Dear Genovese Family,
It's very hard to put into words what Mr. Genovese meant to me and how he has impacted my life. So I'll just say, that while in Candlewood, he was a person for me when I needed someone the most. His compassion, spirit, and generosity were unmatched, and there will never be another like him.
I'm so grateful that I visited him years after I graduated. I told him what he meant to me. He then showed me the 8th grade picture he still had of me in his wallet. It was incredibly emotional. It still is. As I sit here at my desk, 34 years old, a middle school guidance counselor, I'm crying at this loss uncontrollably and wondering when I'll stop.
This is why I do what I do - to hopefully have the kind of impact on my students that Mr. Genovese had on his. And I'm just one of hundreds and hundreds - he has touched so many lives. What a legacy. You must be so proud that he was yours.
I'll be keeping your family in my thoughts, and will never forget a man who quite literally, changed my life.

Never had him in school, however my brother did. My brother always told me that the only teacher he loved at Candlewood was Mr. Genovese. If this man was able to make my brother enjoy being at school, then I can only imagine how many other hearts he touched in his lifetime. No profession is more admired than those that teach the future of this country. I'll never forget his constant smile as I walked passed him in the hallways. Thank you Mr. Genovese, you will be greatly missed.

I'm proud to say that I was a student of Mr.Genovese from 1995-1998. He was my homeroom teacher who I had the pleasure of starting every morning with for 3 years. He was kind, gentle, caring and so loving. He got to know all of us inside and out and never letting it stop past his classroom door. I also had the experience of participating in helping hands after school with him. He was generous and nurturing and always wanting to help the less fortunate. I'm so sorry for all his loved ones loss and pain. He was such a special man and there will never be another one like him. Rest in peace Mr.Genovese.

At a young age, Helping Hands catalyzed my love and passion for helping others. I remember being one of the many to get involved in the social programs led by Mr. Genovese. Only someone with that much love and compassion could get 12 year olds excited about volunteering and taking their extracurricular time to help those in need.
I was a student of his in 2000 and I can't imagine how many lives he has touched since.
Ironically, I was reminded of this quote a few days ago--still one of my favorites--and it seems fitting.
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
Rest peacefully, Mr. Genovese. You will be missed.
My deepest sympathies.
