Obituary of Amelia McCarthy
Amelia "Millie" McCarthy, a lifelong resident of Hurleyville, NY, died after a long and fruitful life on February 10, 2014.
The eldest child of Harry and Rose Shursky, she was predeceased by her husband William (1960), her parents, and her four siblings, (Josephine, Andrew, Alice, and Irene) also son-in-law Michael Lawson.
An accomplished business woman (Catskill Amusements, Inc. and Binghamton Amusement Co., Inc.), Millie was a forceful presence in the coin machine industry in which she was termed to be an icon and a legend. She was the first woman to be named a director in the Amusement and Music Operators of America, the president (25 years) of the New York State Coin Machine Association and an active lobbyist for coin machine industry causes. A tireless champion for women's equality, and the rights of the oppressed. She gave generously of her time, advice, and personal good works. More than anything she was a loving, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, to whom family was everything.
Survivors include sons, Robert (Beverly) of Sidney, NY, and Victor (Ginger) of Hurleyville, NY; daughters, Kathleen (Gordon) Markham of Sun Lakes, AZ, and Nancy McCarthy-Lawson of San Anselmo, CA; five grandchildren, (Michael McCarthy, Shawn McCarthy, Todd McCarthy, Derek Lawson, and Drew Lawson); and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Friday, February 14, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at St. Peters R. C. Church, Liberty, NY with Msgr. Edward Straub officiating. Interment of her ashes will be at the convenience of the family.
