Obituary of Thomas Smith

Husband, father, barber, and life long friend, Thomas Dikran Smith, of Grahamsville, New York passed away during emergency surgery on March 26, 2019, after a valiant battle against infection and surviving two previous surgeries, at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, New York. He was 82 years old.

Thomas was the only son of the late George William and Emma Melconian Smith, born August 22, 1936 in Woodbourne, New York.

Thomas was a member of the Grahamsville Reformed Church and a member of the Grahamsville First Aid Squad for many years, having been one of the original members of the program. He was also actively involved in the Grahamsville Fire Department for many years. Thomas graduated from Fallsburg High School, served in the United States Army, where he worked with tanks and learned his master barbering skills, and worked for many years as a barber, until the 1970's when men stopped cutting their hair. He then was trained and worked as a water and wastewater operator both for the City of New York and the Villages of Fallsburg and Woodridge. During his children's school years, Thomas was active as a Board Member for the Tri-Valley Central School District and spent his "retirement" years driving school bus at Tri-Valley for Gershowitz Transportation, Inc. He and his wife, June, also spent many years with the Tri-Valley Squares dancing locally and across the country as they traveled to Canajoharie, New York almost yearly for square dance conventions with many friends.

Thomas is survived by his bride of 61 years June Carol (Hasbrouck) Smith and his only sister Jane Marie (Smith) Buchman; his daughter, Wendy Hyndman and son-in-law, Harry, and his son Scott & Kate Smith and Matthew Smith; three grandchildren, Josh, Nathan, and Noah and a great-grandson, Gage. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Douglas and Marilyn Hasbrouck, nieces, Stella Jane Buchman, Laurie Mortenson, Janet Rathjens, Kristine Strada and his nephew Kurt Hasbrouck, and several cousins locally.

Thomas was predeceased by his parents, George William and Emma Melconian Smith.

Private viewing will be held for immediate family only. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Grahamsville Reformed Church with friends and relatives to remember his life. A luncheon in the church hall will follow. No graveside services will be held at this time.
