Obituary of Herbert Kaplan

Herbert Kaplan passed away peacefully at his home of 70 years on October 23, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones. Herb was born above his mother's store on Canal Street on March 17, 1921. He graduated from Ellenville High School and enlisted in the army where he served in England during WWII.

After returning from the war Herb attended Alfred University and then returned to Ellenville and established Kaplan's Electric Service in 1947 remaining in business until he was over 85 years old.

In 1946 he met the love of his life Edythe at his father's bungalow colony in Greenfield Park. They married on May 9, 1948 and enjoyed 64 years of marriage.

Herb served for many years on the board of the Ellenville Credit Union and eventually served as president. Herb also served as a member of the Town of Wawarsing Planning Board and the Ulster County Planning Commission. He was a longtime member of the Jewish War Veterans and Congregation Ezrath Israel.

Herb is survived by his loving children Bonnie, Jeffrey and his wife Marla, Richard and his wife Earis, his 5 grandchildren Josh (Rasha), Amanda (Steve), Maya (Mulik), Leigh (Dan) and Danielle (Cliff) and his 7 great grandchildren Eliana, Mika, Nasir, Emmy, Eidie, Sadie and Kai as well as his sister in law and many nieces and nephews. Additionally he was loved and cared for by his dedicated caregivers Margaret, Paulina and nephew Martin. He was generously well fed by Johnnie and Nealom at B&B coffee shop. He will be missed by his beloved dog Prince. He is predeceased by his wife Edythe and sister Frances Pressman.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Congregation Ezrath Israel 31 Center Street, Ellenville, NY 12428 at 12:00 noon, Rabbi Shua Hecht and Cantor Randy Herman will officiate. Interment will follow at Ezrath Israel Cemetery.

Shiva will be at Jeff's home on Thursday following the funeral, Friday until sundown, Saturday after sundown through Monday evening.
