Obituary of Sylvia Rashkin

Sylvia Rashkin, 99, a lifelong resident of Mountaindale, NY passed away in Fort Lauderdale, FL on Tuesday, September 18, 2018.

 Sylvia was born on November 13, 1918 in New York City to the late Bessie and Juluis Gelfand.  She spent her childhood on her family’s farm in Mountaindale, where she attended a one room schoolhouse.  At age 15 Sylvia met David Rashkin in Jay Coral’s Latin Class, and it was then that their lifelong romance began. Sylvia and David where inseparable from then on. After David finished College and Pharmacy School they were married in 1943 in New York City. When David was deployed to WWII, Sylvia remained in Mountaindale where she helped run Rashkin’s Little Falls Hotel at TOMSCO and Rashkin’s Pharmacy.  She was a modern “do it all” woman; respected business owner, amazing mother, and role model within the community.

Sylvia was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, great aunt, and great grandmother.  Sylvia is survived by her children Marlene and Nate Cheney of North Potomac, MD and Judy and Harris Alport of South Fallsburg, NY; her grandchildren Paige and Bart Yablonsky, Beth and Roy Notowitz, Dory and Jay Frischman; her great grandchildren Ayla Notowitz and Noah Yablonsky.  Sylvia also leaves behind her wonderful extended family including her sister’s and brother-in-laws children and their grandchildren.

Syliva considered her friends her family; especially her closest friend Henna Laitner. Additionally the family is forever grateful to Sylvia’s devoted caregiver and friend Berryl Morrison.

Funeral services will be held on Friday September 21, 2018 at 11:00am at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home located at 396 Route 52 in Woodbourne, NY.  Burial will be in the Mountaindale Synagogue Cemetery on Marsh Road in Glen Wild, NY.  Rabbi Yakov Barros will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to local Hospice Care or the charity of one’s choice.
