Shirley W. Smith

September 6, 1927 – July 16, 2017

Shirley W. "Mema" Smith, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Catskill Regional Medical Center.

The daughter of the late Louis and Esther Wright, she was born on September 6, 1927 in South Fallsburg, New York.

She was married for 59 years to Lewis B. Smith who predeceased her on September 8, 2007, as did her daughter Linda Freaney in 2016. Shirley graduated from Fallsburg High School in 1946. After a short period working in the Fallsburg Post Office, she devoted all of her years to raising her large family and tending to the farm and gardens on Old Liberty Road. Shirley was a lifelong member of the Monticello United Methodist Church. She looked forward to her and Lew's winters in Florida where their many snowbird friends were constant companions and dinnermates, she loved to cook and bake for them. But above all else she loved her family, she adored being a grandmother and great-grandmother and enjoyed spending time with them all. She was a tender and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

She is survived by her children, Glenn L. Smith (Patricia) of Monticello, Gary L. Smith (Bonnie) of Rock Hill, Kathleen Beseth (Steve) of White Sulphur Springs and Lauren Frunzi (Gary) of South Fallsburg; her son-in-law: Michael Freaney; her grandchildren: Jennifer Smith Tully (Chris), Michael Beseth (Cassey), Shawn Smith, Adam Smith, Patrick Freaney, Peter Frunzi (Hayley), Kimberly Beseth White (Gene), Kellie Freaney, Kristin Frunzi Mungeer (Brian), Gary Frunzi, Jr. (Tabatha) and Matthew Frunzi; and twenty-four great-grandchildren: Katie, Erin, Avery and Brendan Tully, Chase, Gavin and Blake Beseth, Baley and Mason Smith, Taylor Freaney, Isabella, Adam, Jax and Ryan Frunzi, Parker, Preston and Lincoln White, Hunter Freaney, Grayson and Livia Mungeer, Taylin and Breelynn Frunzi and Brooke and Brianna Roth.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Monticello United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.

The family will welcome visitors from 4 to 8pm on Wednesday, July 19th at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788. Services will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 20th at the Monticello United Methodist Church, 445 Broadway, Monticello, NY 12701. Pastor John Thomason and Pastor Jacqueline Carter will officiate. Burial to follow next to her beloved Lewis at the Hurleyville Cemetery.
