Obituary of John Weiner

John Weiner of White Plains, NY, died peacefully at his home May 21, two weeks before his 94th birthday. His parents, and then he and his 2 brothers, were the proprietors of White Roe Lake Hotel in the Catskills. John served with distinction in the Army Signal Corps for five years as an Adjutant in the 97th Signal Battalion during WWII, and has Battle Stars for the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star and left the Army as a Captain. John received his BA from Cornell University and MA from NYU. He was a truly beloved teacher at the Livingston Manor Central School for 5 years and then an English teacher at Edgemont Junior-Senior High School in Edgemont, NY for 23 years, where he established the Free Books program. After his retirement, he started the Free Books Store on behalf of the Bridge Fund in White Plains, raised significant funds to benefit the homeless, and received multiple awards for his service, including NY State Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year. John is survived by his best friend and loving wife of almost 65 years, Lynne Lehrman Weiner; 3 children, Meyer Weiner (wife Evelyn Zimmerman) of Los Angeles, CA, Erica Weiner Price (husband Phillip Price) of Gallatin, TN, and Sara Weiner (husband Jim Sullivan) of Tucson, AZ; 3 grandchildren, Dennis Hawkins (wife Sylvia), Alyssa and Zachary Sullivan; and great grandson Dakota Hawkins. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. John was a kind, wise, generous, and gentle man; a mentor to many, a teacher to all. It was our great fortune to have had him in our lives. His presence forever influenced and enriched us all. A memorial service in his memory will be held at a later date. For those who wish, a donation may be made in John Weiner?s honor to the Grace Church Community Center in White Plains, NY, which provides emergency housing for those in need.
