Obituary of Rita Carroll
Rita Marie Carroll of Livingston Manor and Montauk passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013 peacefully at home with her family by her side. She was 96. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Margarite Ahern Williams; she was born in New York City on December 7, 1916. She was the eldest of five and was raised on Staten Island. Rita Married Howard H. Carroll in 1941 and eventually moved to Montauk in 1950 with their children. Over the years she worked in Salivar?s Restaurant, Tuma?s Tackle Shop, White?s Drug Store (13 years) and the Bank of the Hamptons from which she retired from at 65. She was a docent at Second House Museum until she was 90. Rita was a member of St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, the Fire Department Auxiliary, AARP, Montauk Garden Club and several bowling clubs. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, ceramics and reading. She volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels and to transport people to doctor?s visits. In recent years she enjoyed going to Senior Nutrition Center for meals and visiting with friends. Rita was predeceased by her husband Capt. Howard H. Carroll Sr. and her son Capt. Howard H. Carroll Jr. She is survived by her loving daughters (Rita) Jeanne Schwarz (Andrew) and Susan Loper. She has four grandchildren: Andrew Schwarz (Susan), Kathleen Schwarz, Thomas Loper (Toni), Kimberly Harrigan (Robert). There are also nine great grandchildren: Nicholas, Patrick, Christopher, Zachary Schwarz, Andrea, Hailley, Jenna Loper, Courtney and Connor Harrigan. The family would like to thank her neighbors Peter and Angelica Murray and Tom and Amie Rhule for the kindness and assistance over the last few years. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at a later date at Saint Therese of Lisieux Parish, 6750 Essex Street, Montauk, NY 11954. Donations in Rita?s name can be sent to a charity of one?s own choice.
